What does a site migration cost, and what does it take?

3/18/2020

When faced with the need to migrate your site to a new platform, here’s the million dollar question: “What does it cost?”

Fortunately, the answer is not a million dollars. Unfortunately, the best answer we can give is: it depends.

There’s a full spectrum of factors that influence how long it will take, and how much it will cost, to move your site. Here are some of the factors that will make a difference.

  • How many pages does your site have?

  • Do all pages need to be carried over, or can you slim down the list of pages being moved?

  • What platform is your site currently on, and how similar is it to the platform you’re moving to?

  • Does your site have a blog, media galleries, videos, etc?

  • Are you willing/able to help move the content (copy/pasting/formatting pages) or do you want us to handle it all?

  • What advanced functionality does your site require (online store, plugins, etc.)?

  • Are you keeping the exact same design in the process, or do you want to improve things while you’re at it?

  • Are you keeping all of your URLs the same, or do you need to change any of them?

Although there is a wide range of aspects to pricing a site move, the rule of thumb is: the fewer changes, the less it will cost.

However, it might be totally worth your while to invest in improvements to your site while it’s being moved. If your site is not mobile friendly, not responsive, or not as functional as you’d like it to be, there’s no better time to explore your options.

If you’re facing a site move (either by choice or necessity) we would happily discuss your needs and wants. From there we will develop a quote so you can anticipate the cost of the move.

Now, the next question on your mind is: “What is this going to take?”

You can be as involved, or as un-involved, as you’d like. We can move your site as-is, and all we’d need is your login information to your site and/or domain registrar. Or, you can work with us on redesigning/tweaking the site, which would require more feedback on your end. And finally, if you’re savvy and have time, you can actually help move some content. Some of our clients opt to do that as a way to keep down costs while learning the new platform.

More often than not, you can give us the marching orders and we will move the site for you. It shouldn’t be complicated or require much from you! As long as you’re working with us or another trusted expert, your site move will be smooth and seamless.
